WIBN January Newsletter
BIG 12 Commissioner Bowlsby Headlines January WIBN Speaker Series: On behalf of the Wrestlers in Business Network (WIBN) Board of Directors, I want to encourage everyone to listen to the fantastic WIBN Speaker Series interview with Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. Commissioner Bowlsby, one of the most respected athletic administrators in America (and one of amateur wrestling’s greatest ambassadors), delivered some terrific messages about leadership, the state of Division I athletics, and some specific enhancements he would make to ensure the future growth of college wrestling. WIBN Chapter Growth: I am excited to announce that despite the COVID-19 related challenges we face, many of our WIBN chapter leaders continue to do whatever it takes to keep their chapter members fully engaged and overall membership growing. Perhaps one of the best examples that we can illustrate is with our recently rejuvenated WIBN Philadelphia Chapter. This chapter was initially launched quite some time ago, and after being idle for a few years while it reorganized, it has been revitalized with a bolstered Board of Directors. Despite all of the COVID-19 related challenges that have prevented “in-person” networking gatherings, these chapter leaders have been relentless in promoting the business directory and career center benefits associated with membership. In just a few short months, they have already grown their membership to 124, and they are just getting started. After reviewing their strategy to aggressively promote the career center/job board and searchable business directory, there is no doubt that this chapter is positioned to double their membership over this year. For those WIBN chapter leaders across the nation looking to deploy alternative membership growth strategies while “in-person” networking events are not possible, please contact me in the NWCA office. I am happy to connect you with some of the strategic planners in the Philadelphia Chapter.
New WIBN Chapters Ready to launch: It is with great excitement that a new South Carolina WIBN Chapter and New Orleans Chapter are about to launch. Each chapter could still use a few more Board members and committee members, so if you live in one of those two regions, please contact Mike Moyer at mmoyer@nwca.cc, and I’m happy to connect you with the leadership of these chapters so you can learn more about the opportunity. Both of these chapters have exceptional leadership and are well-positioned to become some of our strongest chapters.

In closing, there is no doubt that COVID-19 has created formidable financial challenges for wrestling programs and wrestling-related nonprofit organizations at every level. By strengthening our existing WIBN chapters and establishing new ones, we can create an incredible support network for wrestling at every level in every region across the nation. When we lost over 550 college wrestling programs between 1972 and 1999, many wrestling alumni drifted away from our sport. The WIBN chapters are uniquely positioned to create the necessary gravitational pull to reconnect with so many disconnected alumni wrestlers and fans. We are counting on all wrestling alumni, fans, officials, and parents to consider getting involved with a local WIBN chapter (or help us establish a new chapter if one does not exist in your region). These chapters are a terrific way for wrestling alumni to grow their businesses and/or advance their careers. We are just a phone call or email away if you are interested. Thank you for your consideration of supporting this effort, and we hope to hear from you soon.
